How long are your programs?
Duration varies per program. For example, our NurtureVR for Maternal Health is 22 weeks of educational content, while CenteredVR for Stress Reduction is made up of six 30-minute sessions. Our programs are flexible and people can jump in at any point in the program, and used as many times as they want.
Can I get access to multiple BehaVR programs?
Yes. Please Get In Touch about your needs and the focus areas of interest to you and we will be in touch about possibilities for a custom package.
How much do BehaVR programs cost?
Our NurtureVR for Maternal Health is available direct to consumer for an all-inclusive price of $599 for 22 weeks of programming. If you are a payer, provider or employer, we’d love to talk to you about your needs and create a custom package that works best for you. Please Get In Touch.
Are they proven to work?
Yes. People who have used our programs report improvements in as little as four weeks. 85% report significant stress reduction and 89% say they wish their employer would offer BehaVR programs as a long-term benefit.
Can multiple people use an account?
Typically our programs are on a subscription-based licensing model which only allows for one person to have a license.
What is Virtual Reality?
Virtual Reality is a computer-generated simulation that allows people to interact and be transported to new places within a three-dimensional environment. While VR is now accelerating into public consciousness, the technology can actually be dated back to 1957(!) when a man named Morton Heilig invented a multimedia device called the Sensorama. Since then, neuroscientists have taken tremendous interest in exploring the medium’s utility for treating mental health challenges, because of how the immersive technology acts on the brain while it creating a safe space.
Can VR be a replacement for other therapies or treatments?
Virtual therapeutics and wellness programs can be extremely effective in helping extinguish stress, anxiety and fear. This is why we have built all our programs on the S.A.F.E. protocol. Wherever you are in your journey, there is a growing body of evidence to support the idea that Virtual Reality is the most effective and transformative therapeutic medium for mental health — from its ability to strengthen brainwaves to its potential for healing trauma and opioid addiction.
With more funding pouring into relevant research fields than ever before, new insights are being formed every day. And each takes us a step closer to finally making mental health support available to everyone who needs it, whether they choose to use Virtual Reality on their own, or as an adjunct to another care program with a licensed clinician. For example, a patient with chronic pain may require PNE+ in VR to lower their tendency to catastrophize pain, and this can be meaningful whether done in the home, or with a physical therapist as a tool for meditation and education about the brain-body connection prior to sessions. VR has the ability to change both how people feel and how they function.

Who can benefit from mental health care in VR?
Everyone can benefit, as the medium and is incredibly accessible. While VR experiences can be expensive to develop, they are very cost-effective to distribute. We often ask ourselves: “What good is innovation in healthcare if most people can’t access it?” Our mission is to reimagine how people access and experience care by leveraging the unique neurological powers of VR and distributing it in engaging ways — until as many people as possible have an easy, engaging and effective way into better mental health.
Why use VR to tackle stress and anxiety?
Virtual reality is an immersive experience, which makes it easy to shut out the rest of the world, quickly calm the nervous system, and focus on mindfulness techniques. Emotional regulation and extinction of our stress response is modulated by a part of our brain called the prefrontal cortex (PFC). When we are under stress, we engage the primitive parts of our brains that cause us to react. However, mindfulness and VR activate the PFC, the “wise” part of our brain involved in making decisions and higher-order thinking. VR also helps deactivate the amygdala, a part of the brain which sets our stress response into motion. Essentially, mindfulness and VR can work with your brain to lower your stress level. Furthermore, studies have shown that VR can support mindfulness practice by enhancing positive affect, our propensity to experience positive emotions and interact with others and with life’s challenges in an optimistic and hopeful way (Seabrook, 2020). VR aids in enhancing our sense of mindful presence, which may not otherwise be easy to achieve. VR is uniquely equipped to offer a more effective and sustainable educational experience because it engages all four learning centers of the brain, providing training that is more experiential than purely cognitive — particularly useful for learning skills like meditation and mindfulness-based stress reduction.
Does it feel weird?
Doing VR for the first time may feel a little funny, but the headsets on the market are better than ever at minimizing the likelihood of motion sickness or sense of disorientation. Our experiences are made to minimize the likelihood of motion sickness. Our experiences have no radical movement and are designed to be very calming.
Can I use BehaVR programs if I’m not suffering from an anxiety-related condition?
Yes. We believe anyone can benefit from mindfulness, which, for example, is the foundation of our CenteredVR for Stress Reduction. For example, when used with children, mindfulness has been shown to be effective in reducing depression and negative affect and improving psychological functioning (Sibinga, 2016). In the elderly population, mindfulness has been shown to have emotional and social benefits (Parra 2019). Studies have shown that mindfulness is an effective tool to manage depression and anxiety, and even to manage pain (Goyal, 2014).
How does stress, anxiety and fear affect me, and how does a mindfulness practice change the way my body reacts to it?
Stress in the body is measured by levels of the stress hormone cortisol. When mindfulness practice is learned and maintained over time, research shows that cortisol production can be reduced, sometimes resulting in decreased inflammation, which has potential benefits for long-term health. Even the simplest tool of taking three mindful breaths with long exhalations can signal the body and mind to begin to relax during moments of stress.
Can anyone benefit from mindfulness?
Yes. Mindfulness has been an established, effective practice for stress reduction in the west for over 40 years. There is a strong body of evidence to support its use in lowering stress, improving focus, and decreasing anxiety and depression. The great thing about mindfulness is that it’s an internal resource everyone can cultivate. Once you’ve learned the skill, you can deploy it anytime, anywhere.
Why is mindfulness so important for managing our modern way of life?
So many work-place related ailments are associated with stress. So much of our time is spent thinking about the past and the future — and mindfulness brings your awareness to the present moment. In an increasingly stimulating and demanding world, this can translate into important benefits. Learning to anchor our attention in the present helps us meet the demands of everyday life and build resilience in the face of challenges, while also helping us find beauty in the moment. In the workplace, mindfulness has been shown to improve employee well-being and job satisfaction while reducing stress and burnout, issues that lead to absenteeism and loss of productivity in the workforce.

What is maternal health?
Maternal health refers to the health of women during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. We use the term “perinatal” to refer specifically to the third trimester, labor and delivery experience and what some informally call the “fourth trimester” — when most pregnancy apps and care systems tend to wrap it up… but stuff tends to get really real.
Is NurtureVR only for expectant mothers?
While NurtureVR is designed to anticipate and support expectant mothers meaningfully through all of pregnancy’s hairiest and least talked-about challenges, we have received feedback that it is a useful education and empathy tool for the entire family. One of the benefits of VR is that anyone can put on a headset, so we encourage anyone who thinks they can benefit from the program to try it.
I believe I need NurtureVR but may require financial assistance.

How long does the program last? Can I start at any point?
NurtureVR is a 22-week program focused on the third trimester, labor and delivery experience and postpartum period. However, it’s quite flexible! You can jump in at any point in the program, and jump to modules that are most relevant to you. You can even get a head start in your second trimester.
I’m not an expecting mother, but I know someone who is. Can I get NurtureVR as a gift?
Yes! You are more than welcome to purchase the all-inclusive NurtureVR program for a loved one. If you are a healthcare provider, clinician, OB/GYN, employer, or maternal health leader and would like to purchase NurtureVR for your community or patient population, please Get In Touch and we’ll get you set up.
Which VR headsets are BehaVR programs available for?
Currently, we are developing programs for Pico Neo and Oculus Quest 2.
Do I need to buy a Virtual Reality headset separately to use BehaVR programs?
Nope! For most of our products we offer a pre-packaged all inclusive headset, pre-loaded with the program(s) you are interested in making available to your patient populations. This is also the case for NurtureVR, which we are proudly bringing to market direct-to-consumer alongside our continued desire to partner with care institutes, hospital systems, OB/GYNs and other relevant providers.
Will I need to download a mobile app to use BehaVR’s programs?
Yes, we offer a companion app for iOS and Android that syncs with the headset.
Is a WiFi connection required?
Yes, at this time, WiFi is required to use our programs.
Can people wear glasses in the headset?
Yes, the headset allows for more space to fit your glasses and has straps that can be adjusted to fit your head comfortably.
Are there any safety risks?
There are a few precautions that should be taken while using a VR headset.
▪ It is not recommended for children under the age of 13
▪ It is not recommended for individuals suffering from seizures
▪ In some cases, iIt may be advisable to consult with a doctor prior to using a VR headset, which could interfere with certain medical devices (e.g. pacemaker)
▪ Do not use if VR headset is hot or uncomfortably warm
▪ Store the VR headset and controller in a dry place at room temperature and
away from direct sunlight
▪ Some slight discomfort may arise from extended use. If that is the case, please stop using the headset after 20-30 minutes. If you feel serious discomfort, it is recommended patients please stop using the device and consult with their care provider immediately
I’m done with my headset. Can I recycle it through BehaVR?
Yes! We are so excited that as part of our incredible NurtureVR partnership with Save Moms, we have a “pay it forward” program in place. Whatever the reason you have a BehaVR headset, you may return it to us via this program and it will be forwarded onward to an expectant mother in need.
My headset isn’t working. What do I do?
First of all, please plug it in and make sure it is fully charged. If your PIN isn’t working or your remote isn’t syncing, please reach out to [email protected]
What about privacy?
Data privacy and ethics are extremely important to us. All patient data collected is stored on our cloud platform in the Microsoft Azure cloud. Data is managed by ClearData, whose sole mission is to host healthcare computing workloads in the public cloud, assisting their clients with cybersecurity and HIPAA compliance.
