Patrick Murta

Chief Platform Architect

Patrick leads the evolution of the BehaVR platform forward to ensure it is patient centric, contextualized, dynamic, and integrated.

Prior to joining BehaVR, Patrick spent 23 years at Humana, collaborating to build leading healthcare solutions. Most recently at Humana, he served as Chief Interoperability Architect and Fellow. In that role, he provided strategy, architecture, and product to achieve integrated care delivery. Patrick is a frequent speaker and provides thought leadership in the industry. He has served as co-chief architect of the Federal Office of the National Coordinator’s FHIR at Scale Task Force (FAST), a leader of the Da Vinci operating committee and architecture team, and others. He is co-inventor on two patents related to healthcare business rules management and integration of clinical insights in EHR workflow. His passion is using contemporary technology approaches to optimize experiences and help patients achieve optimal wellness.

Patrick’s experience extends to the original HIPAA X12 implementations. He has designed and implemented enterprise EDI transaction gateways, enterprise HIEs, utilization and case management platforms, business rules management systems for case and utilization management, predictive models for member health and safety, and bi-directional payer and EHR integration.

Over the years, he has architected and helped implement leading healthcare solutions, including a CIO 100 award winner in 2020. He recently co-authored an interoperability implementation guide that was approved in January by industry governance for trial use.

Why is a better future for mental healthcare important to you?

Mental health affects us all as individuals or at a community level.  Being healthy mentally is key in achieving overall health, but is too often overlooked and folks go untreated. Having worked in healthcare technology for many years, I know first hand that the behavioral health space is underserved. So many people’s lives can be fundamentally improved with mental health care and I have a responsibility to help move it forward.

What’s your favorite thing we’re working on at BehaVR?

Everything that we are doing at BehaVR is fundamentally changing how folks across society will receive mental health care, including those that typically would have received no care or suboptimal care. I am most excited about the work we are doing to bring our products into the overall healthcare ecosystem as a new medical device therapeutic available by prescription (in addition to general wellness consumer approach).

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Change your thinking and you change your life. You are not your thoughts.  Be present. Events only have the meaning we assign to them. Leave nothing on the court.  Don’t talk about what be a good person is, be that person. Be grateful.

What’s your superpower?

I pride myself in being able to see how an existing or new technology can improve a situation, taking that concept and representing it in simple terms, evangelizing the concept and getting consensus, and then pursuing it as a mission.
